L’Oréal for the Future: Zero-carbon factories and the road to 2030

Abstract: To effectively address the challenges of climate change, L'Oréal China is actively pursuing a low-carbon operational transformation through enhancing energy efficiency and integrating renewable energy sources. Notably, L'Oréal Group’s North Asia Zone has become the first of the company’s zones worldwide to achieve carbon neutrality across all operation sites. Furthermore, L'Oréal China is championing carbon neutrality throughout its value chain. Initiatives include establishing a green supply chain, fostering low-carbon transitions at the consumer end, and empowering the entire industry for green and low-carbon development. These endeavors contribute to sustainable development and the global environment.

Challenge

Climate change is among the most urgent challenges facing humanity. The IPCC’s latest assessment indicates that limiting warming to 1.5°C requires global GHG emissions to peak by 2025 and fall 43% below 2019 levels by 2030. With China’s dual carbon goals now national policy, peaking and neutralizing emissions is no longer just a government mandate — it is a complex systems challenge for business, encompassing three interlocking difficulties: transforming operations, coordinating value chains, and shifting consumer behavior. Enterprises must pivot to clean, sustainable energy, improve energy efficiency, drive low-carbon transformation across supply chain partners, and guide consumers toward environmentally responsible products and services.

Solution

In June 2020, L’Oréal launched L’Oréal for the Future, a new sustainability program with ambitious 2030 targets that look beyond direct operational impact to the Group’s indirect, long-term influence and enabling role within its ecosystem.

Operational decarbonization: L’Oréal committed to achieving carbon neutrality across all sites by 2025 through energy efficiency and 100% renewable energy. The Yichang Tianmei factory built a dedicated transmission line and substation connected to a hydropower station, switching to 100% hydropower, replacing natural gas boilers with electric ones, and electrifying canteen kitchens — reducing CO₂ emissions 38% between 2005 and 2014, and reaching zero carbon in September 2015 as L’Oréal North Asia’s first carbon-neutral plant. The Suzhou Shangmei factory achieved carbon neutrality in 2019 through a multi-source renewable mix of solar, wind, and biomass; replacing 256 LED fixtures saves 44,236 kWh annually; a newly commissioned Class 100,000 cleanroom was built to LEED Gold standards with reflective heat-retaining panels and a magnetic-levitation chiller system. With its distribution centers, R&I center, and offices also fully carbon neutral, L’Oréal China became the Group’s first market to reach carbon neutrality across all site types. In July 2022, L’Oréal North Asia became the first Group region with all sites carbon neutral.

Value chain neutrality: By 2030, strategic suppliers’ absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions will be reduced 50% from 2016 levels; sustainability has been embedded in supplier evaluations via EcoVadis and CDP scores, and by August 2022 all North Asia direct-procurement strategic suppliers had undergone CDP assessment. Since 2019, annual supplier conferences have been held, and in June 2023 ten strategic suppliers co-signed a decarbonization declaration. On the consumer side, per-finished-product transport and use-phase emissions will be cut 50% and 25%, respectively, from 2016 levels; internal guidelines prioritize sea and rail over air freight; 12 urban green logistics routes using LNG vehicles were operational in 2022; 149 million green parcels have been shipped in partnership with Alibaba; and the Product Impact Labelling (PIL) system empowers consumers with transparent environmental information.

Impact & Value

Environmental: With both Yichang Tianmei and Suzhou Shangmei factories carbon neutral, and all distribution centers, R&I centers, and offices running on 100% green electricity, L’Oréal China became the Group’s first market achieving complete carbon neutrality across industrial, R&D, and office sites.

Supply chain synergy: With L’Oréal’s support, label-printing supplier Yali Group’s Suzhou factory achieved carbon neutrality in November 2022, becoming North Asia’s first supplier decarbonization pilot; logistics partner Rongqing deployed 79 EVs across 10 cities, 9 natural gas trucks, and 3 biodiesel trucks, while its Taicang base simultaneously rolled out renewable energy and energy-saving projects.

Industry standards: L’Oréal China co-founded a Health & Low-Carbon Special Fund with the Shanghai Consumer Protection Foundation; jointly published China’s first Sustainable Consumption Action Guide for the Daily Chemical Industry with the Ministry of Commerce’s Sustainable Development Economic Guide and the China Environmental Protection Foundation; and hosted the inaugural Shanghai International Carbon Neutrality Expo’s consumer industry forum as the only consumer goods company featured in the Green & Low-Carbon Casebook.

Recognition: Shanghai Consumer Protection Foundation leaders Tang Jiansheng and Fang Huiping publicly commended L’Oréal’s efforts to advance low-carbon scientific evaluation systems and labeling in cosmetics. L’Oréal’s practice offers a template for product lifecycle assessment in the consumer goods sector and supports China’s high-quality, low-carbon industry transition under the dual carbon goals.
