Leading geothermal innovation to expand green frontiers with new energy
Abstract: BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd.(BBA) has built a diversified renewable energy matrix in China, encompassing full-chain green electricity integration, cross-sector wind power cooperation, and biomethane exploration—leading the low-carbon transition in the automotive industry. In collaboration with the Shenyang municipal government and local partners, BBA launched the first medium-deep geothermal heating project in China’s automotive sector. It is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by 18,000 tons annually, and will support clean heating in northern regions, providing a replicable model for renewable energy applications.
Challenge
As the global climate crisis intensifies, carbon reduction and energy transition have become a worldwide consensus. China has clearly set its "Dual-Carbon" strategic targets and encouraged the vigorous development of non-fossil energy. As a manufacturing enterprise, BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd. (BBA) faces the key challenge of responding to national strategy, fulfilling corporate environmental commitments, and driving low-carbon transformation across the value chain. Exploring energy transition pathways tailored to local conditions is paramount to achieving sustainable development.
Solution
BBA has built a diversified renewable energy portfolio and is systematically advancing the transformation of its energy structure, committed to a full transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. Since 2019, all BBA production facilities have operated on 100% renewable electricity. BBA has also driven cross-sector partnerships to develop wind power: in July 2025, it signed a strategic cooperation agreement with China Datang Corp to establish a green electricity joint venture that will develop 1,000 MW of onshore wind power — making BBA China's first automaker to establish such a joint venture, supplying stable, traceable, high-quality green electricity to the BMW Shenyang production base and upstream/downstream partners through green power trading mechanisms.
In terms of an energy transition "Lighthouse Project," during the 2025 heating season, BBA officially launched China's first medium-deep geothermal heating project in the automotive industry at its Shenyang Powertrain Plant. Employing industry-leading technologies, the project extracts geothermal energy from approximately 2,900 meters underground in a pollution-free, zero-emission manner, operating in a fully closed-loop system with heat extraction without water withdrawal. The project plans 28 medium-deep geothermal wells, covering a total heating area of approximately 580,000 square meters. Once completed, the entire Powertrain Plant will be supplied with 100% non-fossil energy for heating, reducing approximately 18,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent annually.
Impact & Value
Environmental: The project is expected to reduce 18,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per year, effectively supporting clean heating in northern China and significantly improving winter air quality. The closed-loop heat extraction without water withdrawal technology effectively protects groundwater resources, providing a replicable model of renewable energy utilization for other enterprises.
Economic: The project promotes the commercial application of geothermal energy, drives the clustering of upstream and downstream enterprises, and advances the construction of a green industry cluster in Shenyang and Liaoning Province — making new contributions to high-quality regional economic development.
