Building a new ecosystem for green mobility

Abstract: DiDi actively supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), advancing urban green mobility through vehicle electrification, efficient resource utilization, low-carbon travel structures, clean energy sourcing, and intelligent transport systems. DiDi also launched DiDi Carbon Credits to encourage low-carbon mobility, introduced “Flight Carbon Data” on DiDi Enterprise edition to explore sustainable business travel services, built a green supply chain, and partnered with ecosystem players to co-create a new green mobility ecosystem.

Challenge

Climate change is a defining global challenge requiring collective action, and low-carbon development is an imperative for sustainable growth worldwide. Transportation is the second-largest carbon-emitting sector after power generation, accounting for roughly one-quarter of global emissions. In China, the transport sector contributes over 10% of national carbon emissions, with road transport alone responsible for approximately 80% of that share — and the figure continues to rise. With enormous potential for energy conservation and emissions reduction, and far-reaching impact across the economy, the transport sector is pivotal to achieving China's dual carbon goals. Promoting green mobility and decarbonizing transportation is therefore a critical lever for the industry's green transformation.

Solution

As a digital mobility platform operating in 15 countries, Didi leverages its technology and service strengths across five pillars to accelerate green mobility.

First, vehicle electrification. By the end of 2023, over 4 million new energy vehicles had registered on the Didi platform, including approximately 3.5 million pure electric vehicles, with a commitment to achieve 100% NEV replacement across 28 core cities by the end of 2025. In Brazil, Didi’s subsidiary 99 established the Sustainable Mobility Alliance with 14 members, targeting an increase in NEV penetration from roughly 2% to 10%.

Second, resource efficiency through ride-sharing. In 2023, shared rides helped reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 1.185 million tons of CO2 equivalent, with the annual Carpool Day campaign alone cutting emissions by about 210,000 tons.

Third, low-carbon modal shift. Didi bikes and e-bikes contributed to an estimated 685,000 tons of emission reductions in 2023.

Fourth, green electricity. Orange Energy has completed 700 demand-response events totaling over 3,500 hours, with electricity sales reaching 1.4 TWh.

Fifth, intelligent transport systems using deep learning to improve order matching efficiency and positioning accuracy. Didi has also built the Evergreen carbon management platform for order-level carbon accounting, launched the DiDi Carbon  Credits product across 298 cities to encourage low-carbon travel, and introduced DiDi Enterprise’s Flight Carbon Data tools for green business travel — alongside earning the industry's first green supply chain certification for shared two-wheelers.

Impact & Value

In 2023, over 57% of Didi's ride-hailing mileage was served by electric vehicles, contributing to a cumulative greenhouse gas reduction of approximately 5.347 million tons of CO2 equivalent. Orange Energy recorded 700 demand-response events with 1.4 TWh in electricity sales, accelerating power-sector decarbonization.

The DiDi Carbon  Credits, now live in 298 cities, engages the public in low-carbon travel through gamified incentives, creating a measurable, visible, participatory, and shareable carbon-reduction loop.

Beyond carbon, Didi's green mobility practices have been recognized by UN-Habitat's Future Cities Advisory Outlook, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment's 2023 China Corporate Climate Action Casebook, and as an Outstanding Case for Digital-Green Synergy at CIFTIS 2023.

Looking ahead, Didi will continue innovating in mobility structures, greening its electricity mix, exploring digital carbon inclusion, and working with ecosystem partners to deliver greener mobility for all.
